Dr. Jesús Kumate Rodríguez Cancún General Hospital
The General Hospital opened in 1980 when Cancún had 50,000 inhabitants. In 27 years, the urban population has soared to over 800,000 and the hospital also takes seriously ill patients from a wider catchment area in northern Quintana Roo, extending as far as Cozumel. Staffed by approximately 700 doctors, nurses, interns and ancillary workers, the facility provides treatment for the poorest and most vulnerable sectors of society. The Hospital Director is Dr. Narciso Pérez Bravo.
Since 2002, the General Hospital has been one of the tournament beneficiaries and has been able to purchase much-needed equipment for the pediatric, trauma and physiotherapy departments with the donations it has received.
New incubators, cephalic helmets, sensors, monitors and lamps have been installed in the pediatric ward and have improved the quality of medical attention given to newborn babies.
The trauma ward is one of the busiest in the hospital and the purchase of osteo-synthesis equipment such as sets of screws and plates for bone and marrow operations has been indispensable in treating accident victims, who would be unable to pay for medical attention.
Finally, additional rehabilitation equipment for the physiotherapy department will help patients recovering from trauma injuries and prevent future health problems.
The General Hospital works closely with Grupo Desafio de Quintana Roo A.C. during its cancer awareness campaigns, carrying out mammograms for women at risk and prostate cancer testing for men.
